NEW YEAR – NEW YOU! Let’s be real, you don’t need a new year to become a new you but today is a great day to start. Don’t you agree? Realistically, it’s just another day but I love what it symbolizes. Everyone sets resolutions to put positive changes into action. This isn’t a race. Give your goal the full year! It’s your daily consistencies that are ACTUALLY going to change who you are. The New Year is the perfect time to start but it’s sticking to it without giving up that’s the real challenge. These 15 tips will help you achieve your goals so you won’t be starting fresh next new year. You can do this!
⇒1. START SLOW
I’ve personally learned this the hard way. As someone who gets excited by new ideas I tend to go from 0-100 and burn out just as quickly as I started. It’s led me to a lot of failure. Don’t go cold turkey vegan because you watched an inspiring documentary on Netflix. Instead try eating plant based 1-2 meals per week and then gradually increase it to 1-2 days per day. Once you start accomplishing small, realistic goals you will inspire yourself to set bigger ones.
⇒2. PLAN A REWARD
You work hard and this crazy thing called life doesn’t stop. You need something to look forward to that’s going to motivate you. Having a reward keeps you in line. Years ago, we set a financial goal when we were climbing out of debt and made attainable goals. For every $7,500 down we would take a trip. It doesn’t have to be a fancy vacation (although it can be) but we were surprised we started exceeding our timeline. We attribute that to the motivation our reward gave us! Start with a road trip weekend cabin getaway or choose a reward that motivates you.
What we did:
Ate out once a week, cut down brand name household expenses and stop impulse shopping. Instead we got a cheap gym membership ($78 for 2 adults and kids daycare) and made that our focus for dates, stress relief and the bonus is that it aligns with our goals. This is totally do-able! Even with our debt in the rear view mirror we still stick to this. This year we already have already booked Tofino and Hawaii with Airbnb. It’s a reward that keeps us motivated and happy! You may think if you’ve already chosen your resolution that you’ve done this. You may have reflected on the bad but what about the good? It’s easy to get so caught up in changing that you forget the accomplishments you’ve previously made or how far you’ve come. It isn’t just reflecting on your past failures. What are your past successes?
What did you do well last year? Seriously, answer that question. Your resolution is just adding to YOU.
⇒4. FAILURE DOESN’T MEAN YOU’VE FAILED
Strength doesn’t come from being the best right away. It comes from the struggle, the fails and the follow through. Every successful person you know has failed. You know what they do differently than most? They get back up and do it again. They’re resilient. You can be too.
⇒5. YOUR RESOLUTION DOESN’T HAVE TO BE COMPLICATED
Honestly, it can be as simple as washing your makeup off every night before you go to bed for the entire year. Having a new years resolution is more about creating a routine. Once it’s there, it sticks. Resolutions are all about taking a positive step in the right direction.
⇒6. WORK ON SELF-LOVE
This is probably the hardest thing for most people, myself included. Watch your thoughts. If you fail your new years resolution it can lead to anxiety or depression. There was a reason you wanted to change yourself. Only YOU have the power to accomplish your goal. No one else! Failing doesn’t mean failure. Get back up and do it better each time. Say those cheesy things to yourself and eventually you will believe them. It takes practice like anything else.
⇒7. ADDRESS YOUR EXCUSES
Time? Money? Fear? Lazy? Why have you quit before? Once you can own the reason, you can plan to change it this time. It took awhile for me to admit that I wasn’t washing my makeup off every night (and my skin was suffering) because I was just being plain lazy. Now, it’s such a habit that I can’t go to sleep until it’s off. Be honest with yourself because it turns out ignorance isn’t actually bliss.
⇒8. GET INTO PODCASTS
We’ve all heard the saying “you are who you surround yourself with.” This goes for what you’re listening to as well. Download a couple podcasts and let others inspire you. I love Joe Rogan, Oprah’s Supersoul Sundays and TED Talks. Whether I’m driving, doing cardio or cleaning the kitchen, I turn it on and learn something from a different perspective. Podcasts are powerful. They inspired me to blog!
⇒9. IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT – CHANGE IT
For a long time I didn’t believe I could eat “clean” because I generally don’t like healthy ingredients. That was such an excuse. I don’t like quinoa, eggs, chia seeds – so now I don’t force myself to eat them anymore. If it isn’t working, change it. If you’re making yourself do something you hate, you aren’t going to be happy. Isn’t that the point of a resolution? Happiness.
⇒10. PUT YOURSELF FIRST
Don’t feel a single ounce of guilt for making yourself a priority. If you aren’t your personal best then your kids will see that because you’re leading by example. Putting in the time to accomplish your personal goals isn’t selfish. If you aren’t happy and motivated, what good are you to anyone else?
⇒11. WRITE DOWN YOUR GOALS
Today. Write down 3 goals you want to accomplish next year in your cellphone notes. It’s cheesy but having it written down is a reminder that you set out to accomplish something. It’s like taking a progress photo to see your results. This is one thing you will never regret doing.
⇒12. EAT THE DAMN PIZZA
Don’t stop ANYTHING you love. What do all successful people have in common? They don’t quit or fully restrict themselves. They want the slice of pepperoni pizza, they damn well eat it. They don’t beat themselves up or let one indulgence derail them. They just move on. It’s about LIFESTYLE!
⇒13. STOP COMPARING YOURSELF
Don’t waste your time picking yourself apart. Life’s too short to waste time trying to be someone else or wondering what others are going to think of you. You’re never going to be like that person on Instagram because you aren’t that person! Being unique is exactly what makes your friends and family love you. Your resolution is only adding to your bad-ass self.
⇒14. GET ENOUGH SLEEP
This almost sounds too cliché to make our list. Any resolution you have I can guarantee will benefit from this. When you’re rested you are clear to focus and have the energy to attain your goals. It’s so obvious, isn’t it?
⇒15. REALIZE YOUR RESOLUTION IS ALWAYS MORE MENTAL THAN PHYSICAL
No matter what part of your life you’re wanting to see changes in, it’s going to feel like a chore in the beginning. Otherwise, you’d already be doing it! What’s going to keep you going is your commitment. It’s not always about motivation, energy level or time. It’s choice, discipline and willpower. Once you can acknowledge that, game on!
What goals are you going to crush? This past year was a hard one for most and I’m loving seeing how pumped everyone is to make positive changes this year!
