WHO SHOULD START A BLOG?
Anyone! If you have something to say, a passion to share or a business to promote then blogging can be for you. I’m so glad I took the jump and started Mom’s Healthy Habits. It felt intimidating in the beginning but has been such a positive outlet and way to make great money. I am able to have a flexible schedule, travel freely and work from home.
Keeping it real – it has consumed more hours, commitment and persistence than I expected. If you’re loving what you do it doesn’t feel like work and has been a way for me to find purpose in my life.
FIND YOUR “NICHE”
When you get started in blogging you’ll hear this word thrown around everywhere. A “niche” is a topic you focus your website and the content you’ll be writing about. Examples: lifestyle (a bit of everything), parenting, finance, video gaming, recipes – etc. It’s important to specify what your blog is about so your viewers know what to expect from you and it will help you create a loyal following.
Every single blogger has started from scratch. Consistency, passion and hard work is all it takes. We all started in the exact same place *mic drop*
Step 1: CHOOSE YOUR NAME AND DOMAIN
What is a domain?
Your domain is your address on the internet. For example mine is: www.momshealthyhabits.com and I go by the name Mom’s Healthy Habits.
Do research before deciding on your name. Social media is such a powerful tool for branding and promoting your content. Make sure it’s Domain, Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest names are all available. You’ll want to keep it short and sweet while also making it SEO (search engine optimization) friendly. That means you are taking the first steps to making your blog easy to google in the future.
Step 2: CHOOSE THE RIGHT PLATFORM
There are many platforms you may have heard of before: squarespace, wix, wordpress.com or blogger. I personally self-host with Bluehost and have a wordpress.org site.
How serious are you about your blog? Would you ever consider monetizing it to make money? Is it important to own all your photos and content?
If you answered yes to any of those then self hosting with a wordpress.org site is 100% the way to go.
What does self host mean?
Self hosting is a server that “hosts” (what keeps it running 24/7 on the internet) and allows you to own every aspect of your web page. Signing up for platforms like blogger, wix, wordpress.com (not .org) include their own hosting but limit you in various ways.
Reasons to avoid free platforms:
- Able to run their own distracting ads on your site
- Almost impossible to monetize your site to make money
- Limited options for themes and customizing
- Unprofessional URL (www.momshealthyhabits.blogspot.com)
The self server I personally use and recommend is Bluehost.
Reasons I love Bluehost:
- #1 recommended web hosting by wordpress.org
- 1-click wordpress.org installation
- 24/7 support
- 30 day money back guarantee
- free domain and site builders
- affordable $3.95/month plans
Bluehost has a 30-day money back guarantee so you can try it risk-free to see why they’re the one of the top hosting providers of 2019 and used by most successful bloggers.
Step 3: CHOOSE YOUR HOSTING PACKAGE
Select the package you’d like (I recommend the basic as it’s all you really need) and an amazing deal at 50% off the original price.
On the next screen you will get a FREE domain name for signing up for 12 months (or more) blog hosting plans. I started with the 36 month plan for additional savings and to keep me accountable and committed to making my blog a success.
Next is simply payment and if you want to add any extras to your hosting plan. It is completely up to you but I didn’t in the beginning (until I started making money). This is a feature you can add at any time in the future. Make sure you un-tick any boxes you don’t wish to add your plan. I highly recommend you sign up for a minimum of 12 months for a few reasons. You receive lower pricing, a free domain name and you won’t have to deal with an expired website each month. If your domain goes down, you can lose valuable traffic and potential followers. The more years you sign up for, the less you pay!
Step 5: INSTALL WORDPRESS.ORG
You will be prompted to download the wordpress.org (not .com – that’s a totally different site) that will allow you to own your website and give you the freedom to customize it any way you like. You can easily monetize your web page so your blog posts aren’t just being read by your mom (but thanks Mama). They’re easily pinterest and google searchable. You now have an amazing template to get you started.
Step 6: PICK YOUR THEME
You now have a blank website and it’s time to customize it to really make it your own.
What is a theme?
A theme is the layout (look, style and functionality) of your blog. When I first got started I chose the free theme “Activello” and it was a big mistake. The problem was that I’m not super techy or a website programmer (clearly). I was trying to create EVERYTHING from scratch. I wasted so many countless days/hours working on the back end of my website rather than doing what I originally set out to do – create and share my content. It almost caused me to quit. My passion (and patience) dwindled until I finally made the call to start over and purchase a premium made theme. ZERO REGRETS!
One of my other favourite themes is Pretty Darn Cute Design.
What are you waiting for? It’s time to start putting yourself first and making your own goals come true.
