Does saving money feel like the ultimate task? It doesn’t have to be so damn hard. There are easy ways you can start saving money today.
Help lower your stress levels and earn some rewards (uhhhh one of them being your soon-to-be-fat savings account).
It’s okay to admit that shopping can feel good but do you know what feels even better? Getting a deal and being in control of your money.
Don’t eliminate aspects of your lifestyle, refine them! It’s time to ditch your anxiety and start enjoying saving money.
1. SAVE MONEY EVERY TIME YOU FILL UP ON GAS
Gas Buddy is a free app that saves you money at the pump by showing the gas stations nearest to you that have the cheapest price.
Never overpay for gas ever again! You can narrow down your search by changing the distance, price and fuel type.
Take it one step further: choose a gas station where you can double up and get rewards by using a cashback program or VISA points card.
Saving 18 cent per litre makes a difference. Every penny counts! Go the App Store and download “Gas Buddy” so you can have it on the go.
2. UP THE TAXES ON YOUR PAYCHECK
Ask the person in charge of your payroll to increase your taxes $50 per pay period or if you’re able to, to the maximum amount.
You already have mandatory taxes deducted and you won’t notice that little extra being added each month.
Every cent you overpay will be reimbursed back to you once you’ve filed your taxes.
Personally, I love getting a couple thousand dollar refund at the beginning of the year. You’re not making or losing money. You’re simply creating a reimbursement plan for yourself.
It’s easy to do and feels great to have a significant amount of money come in each year (which we use for a financially pain-free vacation).
3. UNSUBSCRIBE FROM STORE E-MAIL LISTS
Sometimes, it’s just as simple as getting rid of the temptation. Even if they’re e-mailing you about a sale, you’re still spending if it’s not something you need. Out of sight, out of mind.
4. KEEP SNACKS IN YOUR CAR
When you’re hangry you can get desperate and reach for any fast food on the road. Keeping snacks in your car doesn’t only help your waistline but your bank account too.
5. PREGNANT? MAKE YOUR BABY REGISTRY ONLINE & SIGN UP FOR FREE PRODUCTS.
I REALLY wish more people did this.
Not only is this easier for 99% of your guests but if you create a free online registry with Amazon, they will give you special deals.

Amazon has the most options anywhere and your friends are already using their website to shop for other products. When you sign up for Amazon Family you also receive up to 20% off on baby items (including diapers).
If you live in Canada and are expecting (or know someone who is) you’ll want to read this next: how to get free baby samples and products.
6. CANCEL THE MEMEBERSHIPS YOU’RE NOT USING
Gym? Netflix? Crave? Amazon Prime? Subscription Boxes?
If you haven’t used it in 3 months you need to discontinue paying for it immediately. There is typically NO FEE or penalty to cancel and you can start it up again at anytime.
7. SLEEP ON IT
Before making a big or impulsive purchase, sleep on it for 24 hours and make sure it’s something you’ve thought through.
Sometimes (you’d be surprised) you forget about it the next day. Don’t sabotage your efforts for a spur of the moment decision.
TAKE IT 1 STEP FURTHER:
Make it a challenge and see how 6 months can drastically change your financial state.
8. MAKE A PLAN
I know, making a budget sounds boring but it’s actually a game changer when it comes to your finances.
If you’re rolling your eyes, I get it. It took me awhile to get there too. It was years ago that I was in line at the grocery store and an old acquaintance got into the line behind me. We were making small talk when the cashier announced my debit card declined. My VISA was maxed too. I was so embarrassed and had to leave my groceries behind. I thought I was being careful with my money, so where did it go?
I sat down and created my first budget that night.
Don’t let it intimidate you. All you’re doing is allocating your money at the beginning of the month and keeping track of where it’s going. A budget is to track if you’re overspending (and where). It’s pretty basic.
If the thought of creating your own gives you anxiety, don’t worry. Enter your e-mail below and I’ll send you a copy of the exact one I use every month.
9. FOCUS ON HOW YOU CAN MAKE MORE MONEY
Start with your job:
1) Ask your boss for a raise. It’s nerve racking but what’s the worst that can happen? They say no. I’ve NEVER been denied a raise and I’ll tell you why.
I write down a list of all the ways I’m improving the company. I include how I interact and motivate the staff, as well as how much money the business has grossed (or saved) because of my position.
I don’t wait for a review. I talk to my boss in person and set up a meeting. If they say they have time now, I have my pitch in my hand and I’m ready.
I outline the exact wage I’d like and why I deserve it. Employers like to see initiative and when you lay out how hard you’re working and how much their business is profiting because of your efforts, it’s hard to say no.
Have you ever thought about having a side hustle? No, I’m not talking an MLM or side business.
You should never have only one stream of income. What do all wealthy people have in common? They have multiple sources of income coming in.
There are a lot of ways to increase your bank account:
